Healthy Detox Tea

tea-pot.jpgI know all too many people who are or have suffered from breast cancer. Many of which had no family history of that or prostate cancer in their family. Prostate cancer by the way has been linked to breast cancer. I became very interested in natural ways to help prevent cancer of any type and I came across one of the simplest things that can be done to help detox your body…..drinking tea.You can incorporate cancer-fighting ingredients into tea to boost your health protection and rid your body of things that may contribute to illness. Trendy coffee bars and restaurants now serve “chai”, a strong black tea mixed with milk, sugar, Indian spices like ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. These spices all contain healthy phytochemicals. In research studies, phytochemicals in ginger seem to reduce inflammation and cinnamon seems to loosen damage from molecules called free radicals, which result from the aging process and are linked to cancer risk.Cinnamon may also lower blood sugar levels in diabetics, according to one study where participants atae 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon per day over several weeks. Cardamom is a mild fruity-tasting seed of a tropical fruit. It is in the same botanical family as ginger, and has some of the same phytochemicals.Tea itself has plenty of polyphenols-phytochemicals that research studies indicate may help to fight cancer. Drinking 3-4 cups of tea daily may fortify cells throughout the body because of substances called catechins. Research has found that green tea contains three times as many catechins as black tea. Drink tea, be healthy and enjoy.Spiced Chai Tea RecipeNote: If you substitute ground dried spices for the whole forms listed below, make sure to add them at the end and not during cooking. Otherwise they will spoil the chai’s consistency.

  1. 4 green cardamom pods
  2. 4 whole cloves
  3. 1 cinnamon stick
  4. 3 thin slices of ginger root
  5. 4-6 whole black peppercorns
  6. 3 cups water
  7. 1-2 bags of decaf or regular black tea bags
  8. 3 Tbls. honey or brown sugar
  9. 1 cup low-fat milk

In a large saucepan, place the cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, peppercorns and water. bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer low for 5 minutes. Turn off heat. Cover and steep for 15 minutes. Add honey or brown sugar and milk. Bring to simmer. Turn off heat. Add tea bags and steep for 2-5 minutes depending on strength of tea desired. Strain and serve hot. (makes 4 servings. per serving: 74 calories, <1g total fat, <1g saturated fat, 16g carbohydrates, 2g protein, 0g dietary fiber, 27 mg sodium)Herbal Bed-Time Tea

  1. 4 cups water
  2. 1 Tbsp. minced fresh ginger root
  3. 3 Tbsp. chamomile tea
  4. 1 Tbsp. dried mint
  5. Honey and lemon, to taste

In a large saucepan, bring water and ginger to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Add chamomile and mint. Steep covered, for 10 minutes. Strain and add honey and lemon to taste. (Makes 4 servings. Per serving: none or <1g for all nutrients)Fruity Green Tea

  1. 4 cups unsweetened, all natural cherry juice
  2. 1 cinnamon stick
  3. 4 whole cloves
  4. 4 star anise
  5. 3-4 green tea bags

Bring the cherry juice to a simmer over medium heat. Add spices. Reduce heat as needed to continue to simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off heat. Cover and allow the spices to steep as they mingle in the juice for 10 minutes. Add tea bags and steep for 2-5 more minutes or until steeped to desired strength. Strain and serve hot. (Makes 4 servings. Per serving: 140 calories, 0g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 33g carbohydrates, 1g protein, 0g dietary fiber, 35mg sodium)
