Are you Singing the Cold and Flu Season Blues?

yoga-for-cold2.jpgThere are many over the counter remedies for colds and flu.  When I read the warnings on most of those bottles its enough to get you thinking about a more natural path to healing.  I tried using some of those over the counter vapor rubs on my kids when they were sick and they hated the way that rub smelled, let alone walk out to the door to go to school with it on.  My 12 year old would not even think of it, ok maybe I understand that, but my 6 year old also complained.  I found a more natural vapor rub that did not have that strong of a smell.  It did not go on greasy and got absorbed immediately into the skin leaving no residue.  It contained Eucalyptus, Arnica and Spearmint. As far as internal health problems are concerned Eucalyptus seems to assist in easing indications of colds, flu, chest blockage, throat problems, bronchitis, pneumonia, and respiratory infections. For treating problems pertaining to the body, Eucalyptus leaves can be used in the form of tea or tincture. Tea prepared from eucalyptus leaves when used as a gargle is effective in easing the problems associated with sore throat.Arnica has been used for medicinal purposes since the 1500s and remains popular today. Applied topically as a cream, ointment, liniment, salve, or tincture, arnica has been used by both Europeans and Native Americans to soothe muscle aches, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds. It is often the first remedy used for injuries such as sprains and bruises.  It helps in easing the tension from coughing when applied to the chest.Spearmint is commonly used as an effective domestic herbal remedy. The tea that is made with spearmint leaves has traditionally been used to cure headaches, fevers, digestive disorders and several minor ailments. Spearmint is often used as an antispasmodic, restorative remedy and helps alleviates spasms from coughing.Making a tea using spearmint leaves also would help with digestive problems whether associated with a flu or a gastrointestinal problem.   I would always recommend checking with your doctor first.Another method for helping clear congestion would be to use a vapor soak.  Using this method I find it best to boil a pot of water and then place 2 scoops of a eucalyptus, spearmint, peppermint, salt combination in the pot.  Make sure you turn the flame off before you do this. 😉  Use a towel to drape over your head over the pot.  Inhale the vapor steam from the pot.  Keep a box of tissues handy as the mucous has to go someplace and usually it drips.  (I know its gross but it does).  Another method for using the vapor soak is to place it in a fabric sachet (sold at dollar store, 6 for $1.00) I placed the herbs in one of them and then placed the bag in my shower, as I showered the steam had an amazing scent to it and helped to clear out my sinuses. You can purchase an already blended herbal mix from the same company that sells the vapor rub.  I purchased it and it does go a long way.  I have had mine for 3 years and it does not go bad.AddThis Social Bookmark Button
