So, you know being active is good for you and your teens. It helps teens maintain proper weight, build confidence, maintain healthy skin, make friends, improve motor skills and coordination, and makes them healthy and strong. Usually, these facts mean little to nothing to your teens. What you need to do is find creative ways to get them active that’s fun and will get them healthy. It’s time to put down the game controllers, cell phones, and televisions and get back active!
- Let them explore sports and physical activities. They may, surprisingly, find that they like a sport or dance/fitness class.
- Family activities – beach, hiking, biking, sport trips for the whole family can be one to help get your teen up and running. Family gym memberships is also a great way to get the whole family in on working out.
- Limit electronics and cell phone usage – just because they have them and you gave them to them doesn’t mean they don’t need to be regulated. Give certain times when no TV, games, and cell phones will be allowed.
- Chores – chores around the house are a great way to know they are being active. Mowing the lawn (no need to hire someone, that teen can do it), washing dishes (give mom that time off), washing car, and just cleaning specific home areas. They won’t like it, but they’ll thank you for it later.
These are some simple tips you can try to get them active. But you must remember to not be pushy with it. Let them know you are supportive of them and that you are not simply nagging them. A good way to not make them feel singled out is to incorporate the whole family in what you do. If you encourage a healthy active lifestyle by showing them you do it yourself, it will be much easier to get them to follow in your footsteps.
